They’re not hiding it. So far they’re getting away with.
A TV news report that hasn’t really caught on yet thas revealed this story. Two Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District high schools – Mallard Creek High School and Independence High School – are inflating the grades of failing students. With “the new F” the lowest score a student can get is 50. (wsoctv.com) Thus, if jermonte doesn’t even turn in an assignment it’s no longer scored as 0; he gets a 50. If laq’ueeta doesn’t take a test it’s no longer a 0; she gets a 50.
The article at wsoctv.com is worth checking out, and the video clip there is worth viewing. You’ll read and hear even from one principal involved that this practice is going on. Listen to the principal of Mallard Creek High, Nancy Brightwell, a White woman believe it or not: “It’s not giving a free grade for no effort, I want to be real clear about that. It ends up being a more true reflection of that child’s skill and ability, than a skewed grade when you have zeroes factored in.” (wsoctv.com)
Obviously the schools are doing this because of the perpetual failure of colored students. Charlotte, NC’s population is at least 34.5% colored. (city-data.com) As for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district its student body is at least 44% colored. (nytimes.com)
I pity schools that attempt to educate coloreds. It’s a losing proposition. I’m just surprised that this story has exposed something that was kind of out in the open anyway. It’s almost a nonstory. Not very much outrage to it even though it is a big deal. I’m sorry schools feel pressured not to fail coloreds. We should give up trying to teach coloreds. At best schools should give coloreds certificates of attendance, but to graduate them when they are such obvious failures cheapens the high school diplomas of those who actually worked hard and learned.
